# Custom dashboards

> Build personalized dashboards with the charts that matter most to your team

Custom dashboards let you combine any of Weave's charts into a single view tailored to your workflow. Create dashboards for sprint reviews, team standups, executive summaries, or any other use case.

## Who can use it?

* **Admin** and **Manager** roles can create, edit, and delete custom dashboards and custom-query widgets
* **Admin**, **Manager**, and **Team Lead** roles can view organization dashboards created by anyone in the organization
* A dashboard can be **restricted** to the creator plus selected Team Lead+ people and teams in the organization. Sharing with a team includes current members of that team and its child teams. Other people cannot see it in the sidebar, open it by URL, or edit it. Invited people can view it but cannot change the layout, title, or visibility. The creator can change who can see it at any time.

## Creating a dashboard

1. In the sidebar, find the **Custom dashboards** section
2. Click **Create dashboard**, enter a title (e.g. "Sprint health")
3. Optionally turn on **Restrict who can see this** and select other Team Lead+ people or teams who should have access
4. Click **Create**

You'll be taken to your new empty dashboard, ready to add charts. Restricted dashboards show a lock icon in the sidebar.

## Who can see a dashboard

On a dashboard you created, click **Who can see this** to switch between organization-wide and restricted visibility, and to add or remove Team Lead+ people and teams. Members of a selected team, including people on child teams, can view the dashboard while they are on that team. Organization dashboards can be edited by anyone with dashboard-management access. Restricted dashboards can be edited only by the creator.

## Adding charts

1. Click the **pencil icon** in the filter bar to enter edit mode
2. Click **Add widget** to open the chart catalog
3. Browse or search for a chart — charts are organized by category:

| Category | Examples |
| - | - |
| Output | Code output, PRs, output by team, output by department/cost centre/job title (requires [HR integration](/data-sources/hr)) |
| AI | AI output, AI cost, AI adoption |
| Process | PR cycle time, review turnaround, deploys |
| Quality | Bug ratio, code turnover, revert PRs |

4. Click a chart to add it to the dashboard

Each chart can only be added once per dashboard, except [custom queries](#custom-queries).

## Custom queries

When the built-in charts don't cover what you need, add a **Custom query** widget. Ask a question in plain English and Weave's AI writes the SQL, or write ClickHouse SQL yourself, then preview the result and choose a table, bar, line, pie, or scatter chart.

1. In edit mode, click **Add widget**
2. Under **Custom**, choose **Custom query**
3. Type a question and click **Generate SQL**, or click **Write SQL manually**
4. Click **Preview**, adjust the chart type and aggregation, then click **Save to dashboard**

Unlike other charts, you can add any number of custom query widgets to a dashboard. Dashboard filters apply to a custom query when its results include a matching column (for example `repository_id` for the repository filter). Saved widgets refresh about every hour.

See [Custom queries](/features/custom-queries) for available data, SQL rules, chart settings, and limits.

## Editing the layout

While in edit mode:

* **Drag charts** to reorder them within the grid
* **Resize width** by dragging the grip handle on the right edge
* **Resize height** by dragging the bottom edge or bottom-right corner (1–3 grid rows tall)
* **Remove a chart** by clicking the **X** button in its top-right corner

Charts snap to a 6-column grid with valid widths of 2, 3, 4, or 6 columns and heights of 1–3 rows. Chart content grows to fill the tile. The grid automatically compacts to remove empty rows.

## Display formats

Some charts support multiple display formats. While in edit mode, a format switcher appears at the top of each chart that supports it:

| Format | Icon | Chart kinds |
| - | - | - |
| Bar | Bar chart | Single metrics |
| Line | Line chart | Single metrics, grouped metrics |
| Area | Area chart | Single metrics |
| Stacked bar | Bar chart | Grouped metrics, AI tool metrics |
| Stacked area | Area chart | Grouped metrics, output breakdowns |
| Pie | Pie chart | Grouped metrics, AI tool metrics |
| Listogram | Gantt chart | Listograms (horizontal bar rankings) |

## Renaming a dashboard

Click on the dashboard title in the page header. The title becomes an inline editor — type a new name and click away or press Enter to save.

## Deleting a dashboard

1. Enter edit mode by clicking the pencil icon
2. Click the **trash icon**
3. Confirm the deletion in the modal

Deleting a dashboard is permanent and cannot be undone.

## Saving changes

After making layout changes, click **Done** to save. Click **X** to discard all unsaved changes and exit edit mode.

## Filters and granularity

Custom dashboards share the same filter bar as other Weave reports. All standard filters apply to every chart on the dashboard:

* Date range
* Team
* User
* Repository
* Project
* AI tool

Time granularity (day, week, month, quarter, year) also applies to all charts. See [Filters and granularity](/features/filters) for details.

The dashboard creator can choose **Save as dashboard default** to publish the current filters for viewers who have not customized them. Each viewer's filter selections are saved to their account for that dashboard, take precedence over shared defaults, and remain available after clearing browser data or switching devices. Existing browser-saved selections are imported the next time that dashboard is opened if your account has no saved selection. An import preserves selections saved concurrently from another device. Filters in a dashboard link apply to that visit without replacing the viewer's saved selection. Choose **Reset to dashboard defaults** to clear the link filters and personal selection; the dashboard then uses the latest shared defaults, or the normal report defaults if none are saved.

## Drill-down

In view mode, click a chart segment to open a detail table with the underlying rows (PRs, tasks, accounts, etc.). This works for bar, line, pie, listogram, comparison, ternary, and scatter chart formats.

Drill-down is disabled while editing the dashboard layout. It also requires drill-down permission for your role (same as other Weave reports).

## Sidebar navigation

Dashboards you can access appear in the **Custom dashboards** section of the sidebar: every organization dashboard, plus restricted dashboards you created or were invited to. Click any dashboard name to navigate to it. The section auto-expands when you have at least one dashboard.
