# Documentation

> Metrics for documentation activity across Notion, Confluence, and Google Drive

Weave tracks documentation activity from your connected doc platforms to help you understand who is contributing to documentation and how substantial those contributions are.

<Note>
  Documentation metrics are available when you connect [Notion](/documentation/notion), [Confluence](/documentation/confluence), or [Google Drive](/documentation/google-drive).
</Note>

## Doc activities

Counts documentation activities, such as page edits and comments. By default, activities that Weave doesn't rate for substantialness aren't counted: page creates, archives, and restores, plus edits with no measurable content change (such as property-only edits and edits from the initial Notion or Google Drive sync). This metric shows overall documentation engagement across your team.

### Activity types

| Type | Description |
| - | - |
| Created | New page or document created |
| Edited | Existing page content modified |
| Commented | Comment added to a page |
| Archived | Page moved to archive |
| Restored | Page restored from archive |

### Use case

Track documentation contribution patterns, identify who is actively maintaining docs, and monitor trends over time.

## Doc words modified

Measures the total words added or removed in documentation. This is similar to lines of code but for docs, providing a volume-based measure of documentation contribution.

<Note>
  Word counts are only available when Weave can compare content before and after a change: real-time updates from Notion and Google Drive, and Confluence version history. Comments always have word counts. Page activities from the initial Notion or Google Drive sync don't have word counts because Weave can't determine what the user actually changed.
</Note>

### Use case

Understand the volume of documentation work, compare contribution levels across team members, and track documentation output over time.

***

## Substantialness ratios

Weave classifies each page edit and comment by how substantial the change was, mostly using AI (edits that change one to five words count as minor without an AI review). These ratio metrics show what proportion of classified activities fall into each category. Activities that aren't classified, such as page creates, aren't included.

### Doc major ratio

Percentage of activities that are **major** changes:

* Significant content additions
* New sections or major rewrites
* Architectural documentation changes

### Doc medium ratio

Percentage of activities that are **medium** changes:

* Meaningful additions or modifications
* Substantive clarifications
* Notable content updates

### Doc minor ratio

Percentage of activities that are **minor** changes:

* Typo fixes
* Formatting adjustments
* Trivial updates

### Use case

Understand the nature of documentation work. A high minor ratio might indicate maintenance activity, while a high major ratio suggests significant documentation investment.

***

## Technical ratio

Percentage of documentation activities on **technical documentation** (code, APIs, architecture) versus non-technical content (processes, policies, general docs).

### Use case

Understand the balance between technical and non-technical documentation. Engineering teams may want to track whether technical docs are keeping pace with code changes.

***

## Grouping options

All documentation metrics support grouping by:

* **Account** - Individual contributors
* **Team** - Aggregate by team

<Note>
  Users must be linked to Weave accounts via their doc platform connections to appear in account-level groupings.

## Data sources

Documentation metrics aggregate activity from all connected doc platforms:

| Platform | What's tracked |
| - | - |
| Notion | Pages, databases, comments |
| Confluence | Pages, blog posts, comments |
| Google Drive | Google Docs content and comments |

Activity from all platforms is combined into these unified metrics, giving you a complete picture of documentation work across your organization.
