How it works

PR approval to merge time measures the time from a pull request’s first approval to when it is merged. This isolates how long an approved, ready-to-go PR waits before it actually lands, which often surfaces CI/CD or release-process bottlenecks rather than review delays. The metric reports the median value. Only the first non-self human approval that occurred before merge is counted. Approvals from AI code review tools that Weave recognizes and from known automation bots, such as Dependabot and Renovate, are ignored, and PRs that were merged without a human approval are excluded. By default, weekends are excluded from this time. To count every calendar day, turn on Hardcore mode under Settings → General → Time calculation.

Comparison with merge time

PR merge time starts when the PR is opened, so it blends review wait and post-approval wait together. Approval to merge time starts at the first approval, so a high value here points to friction after the code was already accepted (for example, slow or flaky CI, merge queues, or release windows).
